We’ve found three spots in Metro Manila with good steak below P500 – service charge included.
Tucked in one of the streets along Kalayaan is Salt, a no-frills restaurant with limited seating and a single-paged menu. They’ve got 14 things in the menu including steak, but the limited menu just makes it a lot easier to pick when you’re hungry. Most people would go here for the steak, which is just one humongous piece of T-Bone Steak served with rice and potatoes for P190. Yep, just P190. The steak is delicious and easily comes off with a cut of a knife and is even more delicious with the accompanying barbecue sauce, which is tangy without overpowering the steak. The potatoes taste good, too.
Of course, if your friends are hankering for other things, Salt also has Beef Salpicao, Burger Steak, Salmon, and Grilled Cajun/Fried Chicken. Try and come early if you can because people come in packs and there are more of them than the seats available.
Fermina Street Corner Enriquez Street, Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City
11 AM to 1 PM (Tuesdays to Sundays)
2. BORGO CAFE
In case you find yourself in Las Piñas when your steak craving hits, you might want to take a detour to the recently opened Robinson’s Mall along Alabang-Zapote Road. What’s there is Borgo Cafe, a restaurant offering comfort food and of course, steak. Highly recommended is the Butcher’s Steak, tender Angus Beef with pepper sauce and a side of salad and fries/mashed potatoes served on a gorgeous and rustic wooden cutting board. The steak is juicy and cooked perfectly to medium rare. All the sides are done well, too. The salad leaves are crunchy and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, while the mashed potatoes are creamy and tasty. A serving for one is about P289, which for steak is a pretty damn good deal.
Robinson’s Place, Zapote Road, Las Piñas City
10 AM to 9:30 PM
3. MAD MARK’S CREAMERY AND GOOD EATS
Make no mistake about it. Mad Mark’s is always packed, especially on a Friday night, but when you’ve got a strong craving for steak, you’d do anything even if it means being on the wait-list. When you’ve finally been seated, make an order for the Signature Steak, which includes a grilled USDA Angus Striploin to your preferred doneness, two side dishes, and a sauce. The side dishes (pick from smashed potato, cauliflower and broccoli, potato and bacon salad, garden grains, garlic rice),
to be honest, are nothing stellar and can sometimes lack in seasoning, but their steak is guaranteed to be tender and tasty for just below P300. When it comes to sauces, you’ve got two options, but we recommend you get the Bootstrap Sauce. It’s tangy barbecue sauce with a hint of booze. They’ve also got the Mushroom Sauce, which tasted more like pepper and could use more mushrooms. If you’re still hungry after this, maybe order a scoop or ice cream for P80 or their signature fries for P75.
